The Perrecas

Home Up

Hi Dot,

Aida and Don spent time on South Island, New Zealand in 1966 poking around into every glaciated valley they could as they drove along.
On the cover of this program is a copy of Don's photograph he took while he and Aida walked up to the Franz Josef Glacier.  The sky was crystal clear, the reflections super.  Franz Josef Glacier is reflected in the water of the kettle hole, while the active outwash is spread out in front.  They walked on to the snout to see research being done in measurement of retreat/advance of the glacier.
Prior to the year of their arrival, the Franz Josef had been retreating rapidly but, in the months just before they arrived, the glacier began to re-advance. Thus Don's interest in taking this photograph.

Dr. Donald Harding Chapman was born in Saginaw, Michigan, November 14, 1904.  He grew up in Nebraska and Kansas.  Don lived the major portion of his life in Durham, New Hampshire.

Dr. Chapman attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where he earned his undergraduate degree in 1927 and his Ph. D. In geology in 1931.  Don became professor of geology at the University of New Hampshire and served in that capacity for 40 years.  His commitment to teaching made it possible for many students to achieve their full potential.

He was a distinguished and popular teacher, photographer, geological researcher, cartographer, lecturer and world traveler.  Among his honors include the 1958 Awarded Medallion of Royal Order of Saint Olav by King Olav of Norway for Don's innovative support of Norwegian students who matriculated at the University of New Hampshire and became engineers in both Norway and the United States.

Dr. Chapman was married to the late Aida Vere McKee Chapman of McDonald, Pennsylvania and Elizabeth Bauer Craig Chapman of Durham, New Hampshire.

His talents, kindness, generosity and humor will be missed.  Don's students, friends, and family members have been blessed for having had him as a teacher and role model.
