P2V-7 Flight Deck

Back Up Next

In this picture, we are standing in the cockpit looking back over the flight deck. Three sliding seats were provided for the various operations carried out here. The flight deck hatch at the top center of the picture was removable and often during taxiing on the ground, the pilot would ask a crew member to "man the hatch" as an additional safety observer. After the seats is a tunnel over the wing beam into the radio compartment and a hatch (door) into the "afterstation" area.

Generally, while we were on patrol, the first seat (nearest) was all the way forward and unoccupied. The second was for the aircraft navigator and the third was mine. My primary responsibility (as 'first tech') during a regular patrol was as radar and ECM (Electronic Counter Measures) operator. When I acquired a target (on radar) or intelligence on a target (ECM), I would report my findings (headings, distance, electronic signitures, etc.) to the pilot and the navigator and a decision would be made whether to investigate more closely.
